Malcolm Murphy is widely recognised for his extraordinary well detailed and personal depictions of Cardiff street scenery.

As he jump-started his artistic career as a street Graffiti artist in his teenage years, living and creating in the streets of Cardiff has manifested the evolution of his creation into a documentary of moments and places of his hometown.

Heavily influenced by his immediate surroundings, Murphy’s practice merges the visual languages of 19th century British art, photorealism, graffiti, and 1960’s Signage.

THE ARTIST

Malcom Murphy exhibition at Cathays Gallery & Picture framing

Malcolm’s journey into the world of fine art commenced at the age of 24, sparked by his profound admiration for John Constable’s landscape paintings. His artistic roots, however, trace back to a much earlier age. At 16, he was already wielding enamel paints while working in the Fun Fair and Brewery industries, honing his skills as an apprentice sign writer for a prominent sign group. It was this early experience that paved the way for his seamless transition into the realm of oil painting.
Initially, his artistic endeavours revolved around capturing the essence of his immediate surroundings. He drew inspiration from his daily commute through Cardiff, meticulously documenting the city’s vistas through photographs, all the while envisioning them as potential oil paintings. This fascination with his local environment remains undiminished to this day, as Malcolm continues to discover a wealth of possibilities for transforming locations into striking oil paintings.

“I want to paint more of Cardiff as it’s where we all live. Everything is there, all the beauty is there, you just have to get it down.”
